Beneath

BENEATH was shot underwater in a lake in Quebec, Canada where our family has had a cottage for nearly 70 years.
It was prompted by my annual recurring dream that our much-loved lake has dried up leaving only rocks and mud.
I think the dream is my personal version of eco-anxiety – a fear of what could happen to the water and the delicate environment as more cottages spring up and the climate changes.
This summer I snorkelled the entire lake to document the underwater landscape.
It’s both an examination of how our human presence is leaving its mark, with everything from water pipes to old propane tanks hanging in the water, and a sense of how the lake is responding. It’s also a discovery of the unexpected and gentle beauty beneath the surface.
